The Mount Pocono Plaza is in the midst of revitalization, with some fresh additions likely to attract new customers to the center and plans to fill the old Kmart space.

An upscale hibachi restaurant and a pet store will be part of the new offerings, with more in the works, Ken Simon, vice president of the New Jersey-based Heidenberg Properties Group said.

“We purchased it with the knowledge we’d have to re-tenant it with the Kmart space,” he said. That’s what we do, add value to retail properties.”

Weiss Markets anchors the center, off of Route 940 in the old Kmart Plaza, across from Walmart. There are a free standing McDonald’s restaurant and Wells Fargo bank in the shopping plaza.

Heidenberg Properties bought the shopping center in Jan., 2013. Kmart, which anchored the 202,000 square foot shopping plaza for decades, closed the summer of 2015, leaving more than 84,000 square feet of retail space vacant at the center. The reasons the chain gave at the time given were to realign the Kmart portfolio with expense targets and its business model.

But that space may be filled again sometime soon. Simon said he is in discussions for the space, but couldn’t go into any further details.

“Hopefully we will be able to announce something soon,” he said.
